What is the CSD?
The Central Supplier Database (CSD) is the South African government's official database of registered suppliers. If you want to do business with any government department, municipality, or state-owned enterprise, you must be registered on the CSD.
The CSD is maintained by National Treasury and replaces the old supplier databases that individual departments used to maintain.
Why You Need CSD Registration
- It is a mandatory requirement for all government tenders
- Your CSD number is required on every bid document
- It verifies your tax compliance, BBBEE status, and company registration
- Without it, your tender submission will be disqualified
Step-by-Step Registration Process
Step 1: Gather Your Documents
Before you start, make sure you have:
- Valid CIPC registration certificate
- Tax clearance certificate (or SARS tax compliance pin)
- BBBEE certificate or sworn affidavit
- Bank confirmation letter (not older than 3 months)
- Director/member ID documents
Step 2: Visit the CSD Portal
Go to www.csd.gov.za and click "Register". You will need to create an account with a valid email address.
Step 3: Complete Your Profile
Fill in your business details including:
- Company name and registration number
- Physical and postal address
- Contact details
- Banking information
- Commodity codes (what goods/services you provide)
Step 4: Upload Supporting Documents
Upload all the documents gathered in Step 1. Make sure they are clear, legible scans.
Step 5: Verification
The CSD system will automatically verify your:
- Tax compliance with SARS
- Company registration with CIPC
- BBBEE status
- Bank account details
This process typically takes 24-48 hours.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Expired documents: Make sure all certificates are current
- Incorrect banking details: Double-check your account number and branch code
- Wrong commodity codes: Select codes that accurately describe your products/services
- Not updating annually: Your CSD registration must be renewed every year
After Registration
Once registered, you will receive a unique CSD supplier number. Use this number on all tender submissions. Keep your profile updated — if your tax compliance lapses, you will be automatically flagged.
