Supply, installation, testing, commissioning and certification of 18 industrial electric chain hoists (12 x 500 kg, 6 x 1,000 kg) with a new dedicated distribution board and underground cabling for six workshop stations at Transnet Engineering, Durban.
Transnet Engineering (an operating division of Transnet SOC Ltd) is seeking a contractor to deliver a complete electric chain hoist installation at its Bayhead Wagons maintenance workshop in Durban. The scope covers design verification, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and statutory certification of 18 industrial electric chain hoists, arranged at six workstations. Each station receives two 500 kg SWL hoists and one 1,000 kg SWL hoist. The hoists must be industrial-duty units suited to roughly eight hours of daily workshop use, with a minimum hook travel specified in the technical documents, a minimum lifting speed of about 4 m/min at rated load, 400 V three-phase supply, IP55 motor protection, Class F insulation, automatic fail-safe brakes, overload protection, upper and lower travel limits, and a wired pendant with a latching emergency stop. The OEM must confirm duty classification, and the bidder may not select equipment on motor kW rating alone.
The electrical works include a new dedicated IP55 hoist distribution board approximately 5 m from the existing DB, with 18 individually protected outgoing ways and at least 20% physical spare capacity. The feeder from the existing DB must be sized through formal calculations covering maximum demand, voltage drop, fault level and protection coordination. Underground conduit or duct infrastructure must be installed to all six stations, including approved core drilling through the concrete floor after scanning for reinforcement, post-tensioning cables and other concealed services. Power cables are to be installed, terminated, tested and commissioned for the nine hoists at Stations 4, 5 and 6 in the first stage. Stations 1 to 3 are to have conduits, reserved DB ways and capped ends ready for later connection. Other deliverables include local lockable isolators, earthing and bonding, cable and circuit labelling, load testing, an electrical Certificate of Compliance, lifting-machine inspection and certification, as-built drawings, operator training, and a minimum 12-month warranty. Final acceptance requires all 18 hoists and the full electrical infrastructure to be commissioned, certified and handed over.
Bidders should note that the tender documents contain some internal inconsistencies, including differing hook-travel figures (3 m in the evaluation criteria and 6 m in the specification), a template reference to an unrelated project in the SBD1 form, and the description of the contract period as month-to-month for four months. Clarification should be sought before the deadline of 17 November 2026 at 12:00. Attendance at the compulsory site briefing at Transnet Engineering, Bayhead Road, on 29 October 2026 at 11:00 is mandatory, and non-attendance results in disqualification. The tender is evaluated on a 100-point scale with a 70-point technical threshold, using an 80/20 price and specific-goals preference system. The estimated value is not expected to exceed R50 million including taxes. Bids are valid for 180 business days, and the completion programme is scored, with the highest score awarded for completion within eight weeks of the purchase order.
This tender suits lifting equipment suppliers and OEM distributors of industrial electric chain hoists, and electrical contractors with a registered person able to certify installations to South African standards. Companies with experience in industrial distribution boards, workshop electrical infrastructure, underground cable or duct installation, concrete scanning and core drilling, and lifting-machine inspection or LME/LMI certification are well placed. Bidders must hold valid electrical contractor registration and a registered person (a mandatory requirement), must have at least one comparable completed project to score, and must attend the compulsory briefing on 29 October 2026. Joint ventures or subcontracting arrangements are suitable for businesses that can cover the full scope through partners. Smaller firms may find the work accessible through subcontracting, though the main contract requires full scope capability.
