Laboratory Information System Solutions

The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) is conducting a Request for Information (RFI) to explore available Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) that can meet its operational and strategic requirements. This RFI aims to gather insights into vendor capabilities, solution maturity, and adaptability to NHLS's diverse laboratory environments, which range from small depots to academic institutions. The NHLS operates 268 laboratories nationwide, processing an average of 405,000 tests daily, with a peak of 520,000 tests. The proposed LIS should support multiple specimen types, including forensic and environmental samples, and provide an intuitive, user-friendly interface that enhances operational efficiency and reduces manual workload.

Key requirements for the desired LIS include robust order and requisition management, specimen tracking, result management, and comprehensive reporting capabilities. The system must integrate seamlessly with existing Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and other platforms while ensuring compliance with security standards such as ISO 27001 and the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Vendors are expected to provide detailed information on their solutions, including deployment models, implementation approaches, and commercial models, to facilitate NHLS's decision-making process. This RFI is an opportunity for vendors to demonstrate their innovative solutions that can significantly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory services in South Africa.
