Eskom request for information (RFI) seeking market input on outage maintenance of primary and secondary air ducting, flue gas ducting, dampers and tubular air heaters at a coal-fired power station. Responses are due 12 November 2026.
Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd has issued a Request for Information (RFI) under reference E3732GXLPMAT for the maintenance of ducting, dampers and tubular air heaters (TAH) at Matimba Power Station during General Overhaul (GO), Maintenance Outage (MO) and Intermediate Repair (IR) outages. The RFI is a stand-alone information-gathering and market-testing exercise. It does not commit Eskom to a procurement, and it does not state a budget or contract value. Eskom may later request indicative prices. The associated Scope of Work (Revision 1, prepared February 2026) sets out the work in detail and covers the draught plant's primary air, secondary air and flue gas flow systems across the six boiler units.
The scope includes inspection, repair, replacement and testing of the draught plant. For ducting, it covers hanger and support replacement, wall-thickness testing, window patching and double plating where wall thickness falls below set limits, expansion joint repair or replacement, and sectional duct replacement, including the cross-over duct and the rotary air heater to M-line section. For dampers, it covers primary air, secondary air, regulating, isolating and mixing point dampers. Typical work includes wear and distortion inspection, repair or replacement of ball joints and swivel joints, shaft gland packing and end-shaft gaskets, actuator and stroke checks, and functional checks. Supple joints in the FD, ID, PA and smoke stack ducting are also covered. The TAH scope includes pressure testing to find tube and tube-plate leaks, endoscope inspection of all tubes, high-pressure water washing with a required drip-dry period, tube plugging limited to 10% of tubes, sleeve insert replacement, tube-plate protection, tube mapping reports and casing wall-thickness measurement. The Bill of Materials lists critical and non-critical items, including mild steel and EN8 steel plate and bar, Lincrete wear protection, ceramic sleeves, glass fibre/PTFE supple joints and Alfred Hyde ball joints.
Respondents are asked to provide: a summary of relevant previous experience; indicative rates per activity; a total cost estimate for the scope; a programme with timelines per activity; experience working at a coal-fired power station; the potential challenges and risks they foresee; and a Quality Control Plan or Inspection and Test Plan with intervention points (Hold, Witness and Review points) matching the scope. Responses must be submitted electronically through the Eskom E-tendering portal (https://etendering.eskom.co.za) by 10:00 SAST on 12 November 2026, as PDF files only. Each file may be up to 500 MB, the total submission is capped at 4 GB, and zipped files are not accepted. Under the RFI terms, all communication must go through the named buyer, Mabuse Maila (mailame@eskom.co.za). Direct contact with the system engineer is not permitted. Information submitted is not treated as confidential. Respondents should not include sensitive or confidential information, and bear their own costs of responding. Suppliers should expect that the RFI may not lead to a tender, and should note that the listing is currently marked as draft.
Boiler and draught plant maintenance contractors, industrial mechanical engineering firms, and boiler ducting and damper specialists with coal-fired power station experience. Suitable firms include those able to provide heavy plate fabrication and welding, NDT and MPI inspection, TAH tube work and pressure testing, damper and actuator servicing, and rope access or scaffolding support. Firms with outage execution experience and capacity to supply a quality plan with intervention points are best placed to respond. Because this is an information-gathering exercise rather than a tender, businesses should treat it as a chance to provide capability, rates and risk input, and should not expect an automatic award. Responses must be in PDF format and submitted through the Eskom E-tendering portal before the closing date.
