PRASA seeks a specialist service provider for air compressor servicing, repairs, maintenance and supply of compressor parts over three years on an as-and-when-required basis. Bidders must visit the relevant depot site, price all labour, travel, materials, testing and commissioning inclusive of VAT, and meet the mandatory compliance and experience requirements.
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has issued a Request for Quotation (RFQ) reference HO-CITYOCITY-TECH-10-09-2026 for the appointment of a suitable service provider to maintain and repair depot air compressors, and to supply compressor parts, over a three-year period. The contract is structured on an as-and-when-required basis, meaning PRASA will call out the successful provider for specific faults, scheduled services or repairs rather than guaranteeing a fixed volume of work. The scope covers attending call-outs to service or repair compressors, conducting major and minor services, performing regular inspections in line with OEM recommendations, and maintaining or repairing units as needed. Specific tasks include fluid and filter maintenance, mechanical and safety checks, replacement of oil separator elements, inspection of tank and pressure components, and site briefings to educate depot staff on daily maintenance practices such as water drainage and air tool lubrication.
Pricing is based on a per-unit (each) rate for service, repair and maintenance, quoted in South African Rand, inclusive of VAT, for each of the three contract years. The rate must include all travelling, labour, materials, fittings, testing, commissioning and painting. Bidders are required to visit the applicable depot site, which is a compulsory briefing and site visit on 29 October 2026 at 10:00 at the Fuel and Harmony Street corner in Coronationville, Johannesburg, to establish compressor make, model, serial numbers, capacity, operating pressure, motor rating, receiver tank details and air tank vessel requirements. Air pipes and water traps are excluded from scope. Bids are evaluated on administrative responsiveness, mandatory requirements (including RMI registration, company-letterhead pricing and a signed MOU), a technical stage requiring at least 70% in company experience of more than one year in air compressor maintenance and three or more relevant reference letters from projects completed in the last 12 months, and then on price (80 points) and specific goals (20 points for B-BBEE status, black women ownership and black youth ownership). Mandatory compliance documents include a valid SARS PIN, COID Letter of Good Standing and CSD registration. The award is subject to budget confirmation, and PRASA may cancel the RFQ before award if funding is not secured.
This opportunity offers a multi-year, recurring revenue stream for an established industrial maintenance provider with proven experience in compressed air systems. Successful bidders will benefit from a government client with a sustained need for maintenance services across rail depots. Bidders should carefully review the pricing schedule, which must be submitted in the prescribed format without deviation, and ensure all returnable documents are submitted by the closing date of 5 November 2026 at 12:00, hand-delivered to Umjantshi House, 30 Wolmarans, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
This tender is suited to established mechanical and industrial engineering companies, compressor service specialists and authorised repair agents with at least one year of verifiable air compressor maintenance experience and access to OEM-quality parts. Businesses should have a valid SARS PIN, CSD registration, COID Letter of Good Standing, RMI membership, and at least three recent reference letters from completed similar projects. Small and medium enterprises, particularly black-owned, black women-owned or black youth-owned companies, may benefit from the specific goals points. Businesses without the technical capacity to respond to call-outs across Johannesburg depots, or without the financial capacity to fund work pending payment on a 30-day cycle, should consider whether they can meet the contract obligations before bidding.
