Eskom is seeking local suppliers, through a Request for Information, to develop, qualify and implement an approved weld repair procedure for creep-exhausted HP turbine rotor discs. Scope covers mock-up welding to ISO 15614-1, an engineering report, NDT, and PWHT. Closes 20 January 2027.
Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd has issued a Request for Information (RFI, reference PR 1076263365) to gather market input on the development, qualification and implementation of an approved weld repair procedure for creep-exhausted high-pressure (HP) turbine rotor discs. This is a stand-alone information-gathering and market-testing exercise. It does not constitute a binding tender or guarantee of award. Respondents are asked to demonstrate their technical capability, proposed methodology, and realistic cost and timeline estimates.
The required scope of work has three main components. First, respondents must carry out mock-up work, including preparing pre-weld pieces and qualifying welding operators in accordance with ISO 15614-1 (Level 2) and ISO 14732, and optimising welding procedure specification (WPS) parameters to achieve the required mechanical and metallurgical properties. The base material for the Hendrina rotor disc is specified as 28CrMoNiV4-7 or 30CrMoNiV5-11. Second, respondents must produce a technically sound, industry-compliant repair methodology in the form of an engineering report. The Hendrina stage 1 disc has 144 blades and the stage 2 disc has 145 blades. Third, respondents must validate and qualify the repair procedure through engineering assessments and testing. Expected elements include initial damage assessment, identification of high-stress areas through finite element modelling (FEM), machining requirements, base material condition assessment after machining, transition or buttering layers, weld build-up sequence, detailed post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), non-destructive testing (NDT), machining back to design, and final inspections.
The methodology should be extensible to intermediate-pressure (IP) and low-pressure (LP) turbine rotor discs across the Eskom fleet, which makes the work strategically valuable beyond a single asset. Submissions must be made electronically through the Eskom e-Tendering portal (https://eTendering.eskom.co.za) by 10:00 South African Standard Time on 20 January 2027. Documents must be in PDF and Excel format, with no zipped files, and submissions must be in English. Clarification queries should be directed to Palesa Mauwane (MauwanP@eskom.co.za) during working hours on weekdays, excluding public holidays. Responses should include company details, registration number, relevant experience with creep-exhausted HP, IP or LP rotor discs, descriptions of similar completed projects, applicable standards, and details of technical personnel and specialist resources.
This RFI is best suited to South African engineering and welding firms, turbine service and repair providers, metallurgical and materials consultancies, and NDT and heat-treatment specialists with demonstrated experience in creep-exhausted HP, IP or LP turbine rotor discs. Applicants should have qualified welding procedures and certified welders under ISO 15614-1 and ISO 14732, in-house or subcontracted FEM and damage assessment capability, and the ability to execute large-component PWHT and machining. Companies without turbine rotor or power-plant experience, or those unable to submit in English through the Eskom e-Tendering portal, are unlikely to be a good fit. Because this is an information-gathering exercise, respondents should treat it as a route to influence the procurement and to position their capability, not as a guaranteed contract opportunity.
