Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, through Hendrina Power Station in Mpumalanga, is inviting open tenders for the supply and delivery of spares for the station's hydrogen (H2) generating plant on an as-and-when-required basis for a period of five years. The hydrogen plant produces hydrogen gas used for generator cooling during electricity generation, so the spares are needed to keep the plant available and reliable for continuous, stable power generation. The contract is intended to secure a ready supply of spares for planned and unplanned maintenance.
The spares list in the Scope of Work covers a broad range of components, including cell stacks, oxygen and gas analysers, annubar sensors, sintered and basket filter elements, O-ring and seal sets, solenoid valves and spare kits, relief and safety valves, pressure regulators, chiller components (compressor, fans, thermostatic expansion valves, filters), thyristors and power supplies, temperature and level transmitters, metering valves, copper tubing and fittings, and potassium hydroxide electrolyte (30% w/v) with certificates of analysis. Estimated quantities are provided for the contract duration. Many items require material safety data sheets with each delivery, and suppliers must comply with Eskom generation plant safety regulations and the OHS Act. Tenderers must submit a complete quotation for all items on the pricing schedule. Alternative tenders are not permitted.
Technical evaluation is scored out of 100 on a weighted scorecard: company experience in supplying hydrogen plant spares such as chiller units and cell stacks (40%), confirmation that critical spares will be sourced from the original equipment manufacturer through a letter or memorandum of understanding (40%, per the Invitation to Tender), and delivery lead times to Hendrina (20%, with 30 days or less scoring highest). A minimum of 70% is required to pass functionality. Price is evaluated under the 90/10 preference system because the estimated value exceeds R50 million, and specific goals (B-BBEE) are scored as well. The contract will be an NEC3 Supply Contract (SC3) with price adjustment for inflation applying from year two. Mandatory requirements include valid CSD registration and ISO 9001 quality management evidence, and Eskom's SDL&I obligations, including skills development and a B-BBEE improvement plan, will form part of the contract. The non-compulsory clarification meeting takes place on 12 November 2026, and tenders close on 26 November 2026 at 10:00 via the Eskom e-tendering portal. Tender validity is 120 days.
Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their authorised agents or distributors for hydrogen generation plants, chillers, gas analysers, valves and instrumentation. Industrial spare parts suppliers with proven experience supplying hydrogen plant components, and electrical or mechanical component suppliers able to source OEM-approved parts. Bidders must be able to provide signed completion certificates and purchase orders for similar past work, an OEM confirmation letter or MoU, and a delivery lead time commitment. Foreign OEMs should confirm their South African tax, CSD and import-payment requirements. Local SMMEs and B-BBEE-compliant companies may apply, but subcontracting the entire scope is not permitted and will lead to disqualification.
