SANBI seeks two service providers to supply and deliver game pellets, dry feeds and related animal feed products to the National Zoological Garden in Pretoria on an as-and-when-required basis over three years. Bidders must provide covered 5-ton delivery trucks, COIDA and insurance compliance, and a 80/20 price-preference evaluation.
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has invited bids for the appointment of two service providers to supply and deliver game pellets and dry feeds to the National Zoological Garden (NZG) in Pretoria for a three-year period. The NZG feeds its diverse captive animal collection using scientifically formulated diets prescribed by a qualified animal nutritionist and/or wildlife veterinarian, and requires a consistent supply of products that meet defined nutritional specifications. The requirement covers roughly 35 product categories, including game pellets (100 and 140 protein), browser pellets, cattle protein supplements, deworming premix pellets, horse feeds, poultry and duck feeds, rabbit and mouse feeds, dog and cat food, parrot and avian feeds, primate feeds, fish and koi pellets, game blocks, rock salt licks, seeds, peanuts, maize and wood shavings. Estimated annual quantities are indicative only and actual consumption will depend on operational needs.
The successful providers will be used on a rotational basis, with SANBI managing the contract to ensure equal distribution of quantities and expenditure across both suppliers. Orders are typically placed weekly and must be delivered within 72 hours of an official purchase order, to the NZG premises in Pretoria. Products must carry nutritional content labelling and a registration number, and the supplier is responsible for offloading and packing goods into designated stores. Delivered goods are subject to quality inspection by NZG staff. Bidders must provide a CSD registration report, a valid COIDA letter of good standing, public liability insurance of R1 500 000 per claim, proof of ownership or a lease of a licensed, covered truck capable of carrying 5 tons, and at least four client reference letters for similar supply contracts over the past five years. Bidders must also submit a bank rating code letter and contingency plans addressing staff absence, industrial action and consistent supply.
Evaluation is conducted in two stages. Bidders must achieve at least 70 out of 100 points for functionality, which assesses previous supply experience, reference letters, bank rating and operational contingency planning. Qualifying bids are then scored on price (80 points) and specific goals (20 points) under the 80/20 preference point system, with points for B-BBEE ownership by race and gender verified through the CSD. This is a single-envelope tender with a closing date of 18 November 2026 at 11:00, and a compulsory briefing session at the NZG Education Centre on 6 November 2026 at 10:00. The contract is valid for three years with an annual review and a Service Level Agreement.
