Eskom seeks a qualified contractor to review the approved design, supply, install, test and commission automatic fixed fire detection and deluge protection systems for the diesel generators and day tanks at Units 2 to 6 of Matimba Power Station, Limpopo. The works tie into the existing station fire ring main and require CIDB 4SF registration, ECSA-registered engineers, and a 2026 closing date of 20 November.
Matimba Power Station, operated by Eskom, requires a contractor to upgrade fire protection for the standby diesel generators serving Units 2 to 6. These generators provide back-up power during a station or system black-out and support black start operations, so their fire protection must be highly reliable. The contractor will review the approved design (the contractor does not design the system), then procure, fabricate, deliver, store, install, commission and test an automatic deluge-type fixed fire protection system. Key elements include valve stations for each generator (isolation valve, deluge valve, pressure gauges, pressure/flow switches and alarm gong), 80 mm deluge control valves, sprinkler and spray nozzle installation designed to NFPA 850, NFPA 13, NFPA 15 and SANS 10287 standards, pipework rated for 1200 kPa, and a design density of 10.2 L/min/m². The system must link into the existing fire ring main and fire detection network through the relevant unit fire panels, with alarms relayed to control rooms and the Electrical Operating Department.
Civil and structural scope includes concrete foundation slabs (25 MPa), brick bunding with drainage to NFPA and SANS standards, and a fire barrier between the Unit 2 and Unit 3 generators. C&I work includes 2-hour fire-resistant (PH120) cabling from pressure switches to fire detection panels, KKS labelling of components, scaffolding, and painting of all equipment in red. The contractor must also deliver as-built drawings, design calculations, operating and maintenance manuals, welding and NDT records, hydrostatic test certificates, and Quality Control Plans for Employer approval before work begins. Training must be provided for four operators, four maintenance staff and one engineer. The system is expected to serve the remaining 35-year station life.
Bidders are evaluated on mandatory criteria (CIDB 4SF or higher, ECSA registration for mechanical, civil and C&I engineers) and weighted qualitative criteria covering fire protection project experience, personnel CVs, method statements, C&I method and key resources, and civil construction experience, with an 80% technical threshold. Pricing is scored at 80 points and specific goals at 20 points under the 80/20 system. Local content thresholds apply to pipes (100%), valves (70%) and cables (90%), and a compulsory clarification meeting is scheduled for 5 November 2026. Tenders close on 20 November 2026 at 10:00 via the Eskom e-tendering portal.
Fire protection engineering contractors with CIDB 4SF or higher grading and proven deluge/sprinkler project experience, particularly in power stations or heavy industrial sites. Applicants should have ECSA-registered mechanical, civil and C&I engineers, SAQCC-designer and FDS interface experience, civil construction capability (reinforced concrete and masonry), and the ability to meet local content thresholds for pipes, valves and cables. Joint ventures are eligible if the agreement meets Eskom's joint-and-several liability requirements. Small and medium enterprises may participate as subcontractors, though subcontracting 100% of the scope is not permitted.
