Overview

Summary

Provision of practical and on-the-job training for furnace operators at Necsa's Smelter Plant, covering coreless induction furnace operation, process control, emergency response and safety compliance. Service providers must supply qualified trainers, a training plan, individual competency assessments and final reporting.

Detailed Description

The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) is seeking a qualified training service provider to deliver practical and on-the-job training for furnace operators at its Smelter Plant. The requirement is governed by Necsa's approved Scope of Work (Document NLM-URT-26/001), which targets the safe and competent operation of the 125 kg/100 kW Coreless Induction Furnace and two 4-ton induction furnaces, together with associated plant equipment. Training is hands-on and centred on actual plant equipment where operationally and safely practicable, and covers furnace preparation, pre-operational inspections, charge preparation and loading, start-up and shutdown, melting and process control, molten metal temperature measurement, tapping and casting, slag management, sampling, and monitoring of cooling water, emergency cooling and off-gas systems.

The scope extends to refractory lining inspection and condition monitoring, basic operational troubleshooting, identification of abnormal conditions and equipment faults requiring maintenance intervention, and first-line corrective actions within each operator's authorised responsibilities. A substantial component addresses safety, environmental and radiological protection, including job hazard analysis, tag-in/tag-out, PPE/PPC requirements, safe handling of molten metal, arc flash awareness, emergency response to furnace, cooling water, power and off-gas failures, and compliance with Necsa SOPs. Operators are not to be trained or authorised for maintenance activities beyond their defined roles.

The service provider must submit a detailed training plan and methodology for Necsa's approval before commencement, prepare an individual competency portfolio for each participant, and conduct individual practical assessments with reassessment and additional coaching where competence is not initially demonstrated. Trainers must have extensive practical Coreless Induction Furnace experience, demonstrable operator-training experience, and knowledge of metallurgy, furnace electrical systems, instrumentation, refractory monitoring and competency-based assessment; Merseta-registered trainers are preferred. Deliverables include training materials, attendance records, competency certificates for qualifying operators, and a final training report. Training is not deemed complete on attendance alone. Necsa will provide plant access, approved SOPs, site-specific safety induction, PPE/PPC, and nominated participants. Suppliers should review the full tender documents, including the RFQ and evaluation criteria, before submitting a quotation by the closing date.

Suitable Businesses

This tender is suited to accredited training providers and industrial skills development organisations with demonstrable experience in induction furnace or smelter operations, competency-based assessment, and occupational health and safety training. Applicants should have qualified trainers with metallurgy or furnace operations backgrounds, experience working in nuclear or hazardous industrial environments, and ideally Merseta accreditation or registration with recognised training authorities. Businesses without practical furnace or smelting expertise, or those unable to deliver hands-on training at a controlled industrial site, are unlikely to be suitable.
